Specifically, Schneider Electric is leading the digital transformation of energy management and automation. To further support these activities, Schneider Electric is looking to recruit a Patent Attorney.
Position Description (Essential Functions):
This role will principally focus on patent procurement and portfolio development, including:
- drafting and filing patent applications;
- coordinating international extension filings;
- managing patent portfolios
- including reviewing office actions and drafting response based on feedback from the Business;
- communicating with outside attorneys;
- training and assisting technologists in recognizing patentable inventions and submitting invention disclosures;
- preparing freedom-to-operate/clearance studies regarding third party patent rights;
- participating in design review meetings, brainstorming sessions and innovation workshops;
- leading invention identification sessions within selected projects;
- overseeing and involvement in the invention disclosure submission and evaluation processes; and
- providing other assistance and support to R&D, marketing, and Legal department staff as required, including on litigation matters.
The primary responsibility of this role will be to support France based R&D and some travel to R&D centers in France will be required.
Professional Qualifications/Requirements:
- European Patent Office qualified/partly qualified patent attorney and French national qualification (non-qualified with qualification in progress and experience in patent prosecution will also be considered);
- Have a MSc. degree in electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or mechanical engineering, preferably with software expertise;
- Minimum 5 to 7 years’ experience in the field of intellectual property in developing patent portfolios;
- Preferably professional experience in both Law Firm and In-House multinational environments;
- Knowledge (relative to experience) of laws, rules regulations and practice under EPO and preferably French national patent system;
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement standards ensuring procurement of patents of the highest quality and business relevance; and
- Demonstrated ability to direct and manage outside counsel.
Personal Qualities:
- Self starter / proactive
- Proven ability to quickly identify, prioritize, and analyze issues, to create solutions, to communicate in a counseling role, and to work effectively and team with all levels of management;
- Good commercial acumen;
- Clear communication skills - written and oral; and
- Fluency/proficiency in French and English (oral & written) required, with another European language would be a plus.
